Time Telling Initiative

DiscountWatchStore.com, a leading online watch retailer, has embarked on a mission to bring the skill of telling the time on analog watches to kids from impoverished neighborhoods across the nation.

Support our Easy Time Teller Kickstarter campaign to create a watch that will teach children how to tell time in 2 easy steps.

We conducted a study earlier in 2015, in the Bronx, NY area. The participants were children between the ages of 6-12. What we found was that only 1 in 5 actually scored full marks in the study. That’s just 20% having the ability to tell time on an analog watch. What was even a starker number was the amount of children actually owning a wristwatch – just 1 in 10. DiscountWatchStore.com teamed up with the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center to offer 100 children to opportunity to learn time telling on analog watches through fun and interactive games and activities. The event was roaring success.

We conducted another study in November this time in the Southwest Connecticut area. The study encompassed 200 children between the ages of 8-11 years of age. The results we received were as follows: 1 in 14 children scoring full marks on the survey, and 1 in 10 owning a wristwatch. This time around we are joining forces with the Wakeman Boy’s and Girl’s Club to offer workshops in time telling. The event took place on December 8th, 2015.

"It is alarming how many children only know what a digital clock reads, and despite an era of digital technology, there will undoubtedly come a time when today’s youth will need to read the time on an analog clock. It is a basic skill every individual should possess," said DiscountWatchStore.com owner Zai Zhu. "Giving back to our local Connecticut community is something we are very passionate about, and after learning that only 1 in 10 children at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club even owned a watch, we are delighted to be equipping them with brand new wristwatches as a Christmas present from us.”

The benefits of having the ability to tell the time on an analog watch include improving math skills, analysis and interpretation, and time zones. It is important to fully grasp the passage of time and how we measure it.
